In its basic "DS" mode, it is an effective, level-insensitive de-esser that adjusts the gain of high frequencies on vocals or overly bright sources in an extremely musical way. Unlike other de-essers, its circuitry can be used in several ways.

Four modes

DS Mode: de-esser with level-independent threshold: it compares the high-frequency content with the low-frequency content, so the overall level setting does not affect the threshold. Selectable VCAs for noise and distortion-free performance; adjustable crossover frequency.

HF Limit: acts as a high-frequency compressor, arguably the first custom soft-knee HF limiter.

Highpass: with LISTEN active, you can hear the high frequencies controlled by the dynamic circuits; frequency adjustable with the Frequency knob.

Lowpass: with LISTEN and HP/LP active, you can hear the low frequencies, with an adjustable 12 dB/octave filter.

Technical specifications

Frequency response: 3 Hz – 120 kHz (-3 dB)

Dynamic range: 115 dB; typical noise floor -93 dBu

Distortion: 0.0035% to 0.01%

DC-coupled inputs and outputs; balanced input, impedance-balanced unbalanced output (pin 2 hot)

Input impedance: 20 kOhm; output impedance: < 51 Ohm

D-S time constants: attack < 1 ms, release 0.04 s

Power consumption: 8 W max (4 W typical)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0972/0643/6173/files/empirical-labs-derresser-500-horizontal-front-view-76174-v1_04cffd5e-e825-4580-8a22-c860b080c6f9.jpg?v=1790861921
