This can be thought of as a double-layered sequencing where the first layer is a traditional 16-step sequencer, while the second adds cycle variations, note variations, micro-sequencing, direction, parameter changes, re-trig, and much more, all on a single step. With TEENAGE ENGINEERING OP-Z, one could theoretically create an entire song using only the 1st of 16 steps, using multiple step components to create endless variations, a technique recommended only for experts and engineers. In some situations, however, it is practically impossible to predict the full length of a sequence, so TEENAGE ENGINEERING created a special component called 'catch up,' which forces a track to exit at a specific step to stay in sync. In total, there are 14 components arranged in 3 groups: triggers, note variations, and special. Each of the 14 components has 10 values and behavior programs, thus allowing for 140 ways to modify a single step – probably more than most people can handle.
