Supercardioid Ribbon Microphone
The AEA KU4 is a supercardioid ribbon microphone that allows you to capture the direct sound of a singer or instrument without room tone. This is an advantage when live-recording different musicians in the same room or when used live on stage. With most figure-8 pattern ribbon microphones, microphone placement can require extreme finesse to avoid bleed from other sound sources. The AEA KU4 has none of these problems.
As a near-field microphone, it was designed to be placed between 2 and 45 inches from the source. The microphone's proximity effect begins 6 inches from the sound source. It can be placed close to an instrument while maintaining a balanced frequency response.
In fact, unlike most traditional ribbon microphones, the KU4's position should be thought of in terms of centimeters rather than meters. Of course, the AEA KU4 can also be placed at a distance from the sound source, but it will have a more balanced sound up close.
The AEA KU4 can handle 140+ dB SPL at 1 kHz. This means it is not damaged by loud sound sources.
