Supercardioid Ribbon Microphone
The AEA KU5A is a supercardioid ribbon microphone that captures pure direct sound while rejecting room tone from behind the microphone. This feature prevents excessive audience bleed when recording musicians in a room or on stage. Traditional figure-8 ribbon microphones, which distinctly incorporate both direct sound and ambient sound, rely on very well-defined “plane nulls” to avoid unwanted bleed.
The accentuated directivity and very tight supercardioid pattern of the AEA KU5A allow for effortless placement on snare drums, toms and other instruments that can be difficult to access. Signal bleed captured by dynamic and condenser microphones often sounds harsh and unstable due to high-end frequencies. The minimal bleed captured by the AEA KU5A sounds more natural due to its soft top end.
