The AEA NUVO N8 is a far-field ribbon microphone, which means it is designed to be positioned at an ideal distance of 30 cm or more from the sound source. The far-field design allows for a wide range of options when positioning the AEA NUVO N8 to best capture an instrument in the context of a room.
From a distance of 6 meters, the AEA NUVO N8 retains the low-end frequencies of the sources it captures, and its open and natural tone makes it perfect for recording an entire orchestra or the bottom end of a drum kit from above. The proximity effect of the AEA NUVO N8 is present when recording a source from more than 30 cm, so this feature can be used to accentuate the low end of a vocal or string instrument. Potential damage from loud sources is not a concern, even at such a short distance, as the AEA NUVO N8 can handle 141+ dB SPL at 1 kHz.
