Designed to be a first-choice vocal microphone, the AT5040 features an extremely smooth high-frequency response that minimizes sibilance. Its large diaphragm and fast transient response also make it ideal for recording acoustic instruments such as piano, guitar, strings and saxophone. Rectangular four-diaphragm structure. Our first design criterion for the AT5040 was purity of sound. To achieve this, Audio-Technica engineers developed a four-part rectangular element, the pinnacle of our recent innovations in sound capture technology. Four ultra-thin diaphragms operate together (with summed outputs) as if they were a single, larger capsule, generating an overall surface area double that achievable with a standard circular diaphragm. By using four diaphragms in a single capsule, the AT5040 offers the advantages of an exceptionally large diaphragm - with very low self-noise - without increased weight, diminished transient response or other disadvantages typically associated with diaphragm size. Another key feature of the AT5040 is the advanced internal shock-mount system that effectively separates the capsule from the microphone body. Each AT5040 is also supplied with the innovative AT8480 anti-shock suspension for even greater isolation. Advanced circuit design. To ensure optimal capsule performance, the AT5040 circuit uses only discrete electronic components. Every single electronic component for the circuit board assembly is carefully selected based on its sound quality. Our method of combining the outputs of the four independent elements in this patent-pending design is truly unique. Using this exclusive method we were able to quadruple the microphone's sensitivity to -25 DB. This high sensitivity allows the AT5040 to perform optimally with a wide range of microphone preamplifiers. 100% quality control. All AT5040s are hand-assembled and individually checked, thus ensuring 100% quality control. Each microphone is enclosed in an elegant aluminum and brass casing with a high-quality gray finish for long durability and low reflectivity. Discrete components were selected to optimize capsule performance; in fact, every aspect of the microphone was carefully considered to minimize any effects on the audio signal.
