AUDIOQUEST DRAGONFLY RED is a miniaturized 24-bit/96kHz USB Digital Audio Converter that reproduces any digital music content, from MP3s to high-resolution formats.
The new DragonFlys were developed by AudioQuest with Microchip Technology to create a high-performance, high-speed USB microcontroller (the input processor of a DAC) capable of delivering a better signal-to-noise ratio while consuming much less power. The results have been excellent, as the new Microchip MX microcontroller consumes 77% less power than the one used in the DragonFly 1.2 and allows full compatibility with Apple and Android phones and tablets.
In the AUDIOQUEST DRAGONFLY RED, every aspect has been meticulously cared for: noise control, power supply regulation type, and passive component quality. And even if the DAC chips used in the DragonFly Red and Black designs allowed for any resolution, AudioQuest preferred to limit it to 24-bit/96kHz, making their use simple and fully compatible with any device, without having to download and install specific support programs. Furthermore, compatibility with higher resolutions usually entails more noise, so for AudioQuest, the best choice was to limit compatibility to 24/96.
AUDIOQUEST DRAGONFLY RED uses the new 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC 9016 which employs minimal filtering to achieve natural detail and more realistic sound. It features an ESS headphone amplifier with bit-perfect digital volume control within the 9016 DAC, a sophisticated implementation that guarantees maximum fidelity, high dynamic contrast, and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
The output of the AUDIOQUEST DRAGONFLY RED can reach 2.1 volts, a value compatible with a wide range of headphones, including low-efficiency models, which are typically power-hungry.
The new DragonFlys can be updated via a free Windows and OS X compatible application. When new music players, next-generation audio streaming protocols, or other associated software become available, DragonFly customers will be able to implement updates themselves without difficulty.
