The BLACK LION AUDIO B172A is a hybrid compressor that combines the F.E.T. circuitry of the acclaimed SEVENTEEN with an equally high-quality optical section (known as T4BLA). This unit combines the two separate '76 and 2A circuits into a single unit, allowing you to route the signal in any order you desire.
BLA's extensive experience in modifications has given its designers the patience and mindset to fine-tune the details of the optical element until it became a supreme asset in the design of this product. Indeed, the T4BLA is engineered to be the best T4B optocell available today.
Flexibility was a key objective for the BLACK LION AUDIO B172A from its inception. While many engineers agree on the benefits of using both types of compression, the order in which to do so is still debated. The AB-BA switch on the B172A allows for quick internal signal routing. The two compressors can also be used completely independently of each other when using the third position (link off) on the AB-BA switch. Each circuit also has a stereo link, so a pair of BLACK LION AUDIO B172A units can be used in stereo.
As always, meticulous time was dedicated to selecting the best possible transformers required for the circuit. With a Cinemag input transformer on the LA-2A side, Chicago-wound BLA output transformers on both circuits, and high-quality signal and decoupling signal conductors, the BLACK LION AUDIO B172A offers studio owners ultra-convenient access to a pair of high-quality dynamic processors that have stood the test of time, combined into a never-before-seen instrument.
