500 Series Equalizer and Tone Control - vertical version
- Six digitally-controlled analog processing sections
- API 500 format, vertical panel
The DocDerr is a multi-purpose 500 series tone enhancement module housing six digitally-controlled analog processing sections. The result of over two years of development, it offers a unique combination of power and musicality in a compact format. It is the first Empirical Labs compressor in the API 500 format.
A very low-noise preamp, usable with line or instrument signals, is followed by four EQ sections: a two-position high-pass filter and three parametric bands, each with carefully tuned frequency presets. An internal jumper turns the DocDerr into an instrument preamp with 16 dB of gain, ideal for acoustic guitar, bass, and synthesizers.
The EQ is followed by a dynamics section featuring renowned Empirical Labs compression and a tape emulation circuit that softens high frequencies and transient peaks. The Mix knob allows you to blend the uncompressed, equalized signal with the compressed and saturated one for immediate parallel compression.
Like all ELI 500 series modules, the EL-Rx is available with a horizontal or vertical front panel and can be stereo-linked. Ideal for tracking, mixing, or for the acoustic musician seeking studio-quality sound control.

About Empirical Labs
Empirical Labs is a US-based company founded in 1989 by Dave Derr, headquartered in New Jersey, and specialized in the design and manufacture of professional audio signal processing equipment. Their first product, the Distressor, developed starting in 1994 and marketed from 1996, represented the starting point of the brand’s production and defined its approach to the design of original analog processors. Over the years, Empirical Labs has expanded its range with compressors, dynamics processors, microphone preamplifiers, equalizers, and processors dedicated to saturation and the simulation of analog behavior, including the FATSO, Mike-E, Lil FrEQ, and DerrEsser. The company also develops plug-ins and DSP software, including Arousor, and manufactures its devices in the United States, subjecting them to manual calibration and testing.
