500 Series Compressor
The FREDENSTEIN F600A is a unique 500 series compressor. It does not use VCAs, FETs, Optos, Tubes (vari-mu), diode bridges, or pulse-width switching. Instead, it uses a pair of digitally controlled attenuators/amplifiers for gain reduction and make-up gain. This provides a unique and extremely versatile sound, regardless of what other compressors you might own. It has been described as exceptionally smooth, clean, and capable of extreme output levels.
The FREDENSTEIN F600A is a high-performance tool for professional sound and mastering engineers. It comprises an analog gain control circuit and a digital side-chain based on two DSPs. This technology can easily achieve more than 20 dB of gain reduction while maintaining very low distortion. Up to ten units can be linked together to form a very accurate multichannel compressor.
Familiar controls include; Threshold, Ratio (from 1:1 to 100:1), Attack and Release (dB/linear), and make-up gain. One button selects RMS or PEAK and Hard-Knee or Soft-Knee, another selects Link, and another button is used for Bypass. A tunable high-pass filter can be adjusted from flat up to 4 kHz. The FREDENSTEIN F600A can be used as a De-Esser or, at the limit, as a cutting speed limiter. It also uses an analog VU meter to traditionally display gain reduction.
When inserted into a FREDENSTEIN BENTO 6D or 10D, settings will automatically be displayed on the BENTO's LCD screen, which makes accurate recalls a breeze.
The FREDENSTEIN F600A features both an external and internal fully balanced signal path with much lower distortion than conventional compressors. This results in more pronounced and cleaner sounds. It does not sound "digital" and does not sound like a plug-in - it is still analog. The extremely low output impedance with its high current design can withstand even the most difficult and complex loads up to +26 dBu without sonic impact.
