Tube Microphone Preamp
The FREDENSTEIN F609 is a tube microphone preamp, utilizing two dual triodes, an ECC802S (12AU7) and an ECC803S (12AX7), in a single 500 series rack module. It provides a +160V power supply to prevent starving the tubes. The FREDENSTEIN F609 uses high-quality input and output transformers manufactured in America.
The main feature of the FREDENSTEIN F609 is the combination of the Input Gain knob (from 0 to +70 dB) plus the Output Gain, along with the signal path of the tube circuit. The output level control allows you to change the amplifier characteristics until you achieve true old-school tube distortion. The sound is very smooth with a wide and well-defined low end.
The FREDENSTEIN F609 is particularly interesting in combination with the FREDENSTEIN F602 tube compressor, if you like high-end vintage tones and the character of original tubes. It pairs excellently with the Artistic Compressor and the Artistic Leveller for a sound reminiscent of traditional 1970s tube microphone preamps in chain with FET or opto solid-state compressors. Some engineers keep all three together.
Other features include: a 20dB pad, polarity control, phantom power, a two-stage low-cut filter, and a standby mode to preserve the tubes when not in use. The traditional VU meter is standard.
Not all racks can provide the 250 mA required by the F609, but any Bento series is suitable for this purpose.
