FREDENSTEIN F660 Tube Compressor/Limiter
Estimated delivery in Italy between 16 and 18 June
Tube compressor/limiter
The FREDENSTEIN F660 is a tube compressor/limiter with the same signal path as the famous Fairchild 660/670. It uses the exact same type of tubes as the Fairchild, the 6386 LGP, and 4 of them per channel like the Fairchild.
The 4 tubes form a single-stage Class A push-pull amplifier, and the entire signal path consists only of a T-type input attenuator, an input transformer, a Class A tube amplifier, and finally the massive output transformer. At this point, the similarities end.
The FREDENSTEIN F660 uses a DSP to control the operating points of the tubes, always ensuring perfect working conditions. The side-chain amplifier is designed with semiconductor components as it "only" generates the control voltage for the tubes. The end result is a compressor with the compression characteristics of the Fairchild, but with extended frequency response, lower noise, and low distortion.
The front panel provides immediate access to the most used controls: Make-up gain, Threshold, and Release. There are 6 release settings designed to mimic the original Fairchild switch. The 3 encoders also act as buttons for Bypass, Sidechain, High-Pass Filter, and Stereo Link.
The LCD screen is used to set more parameters such as attack (6 attack time settings), metering range plus RMS options, peak and hold settings, and a calibration mode.
The FREDENSTEIN F660 also allows storing and recalling 99 User Presets, which is a rather useful feature in a mastering situation, especially since the FREDENSTEIN F660 is mostly self-calibrating and has a simple method for exact calibration, so repeatability is not an issue.
The old Fairchild 660 is a classic compressor with some highly desirable compression characteristics but perhaps some shortcomings in terms of pure fidelity. The FREDENSTEIN F660 combines the sought-after character of the original with audio performance suitable for modern production and mastering.
