SGX-2 Sound Engine dedicated to grand pianos
This generator, dedicated to acoustic pianos, produces high-quality sounds based on Stereo Samples without loops, sampled for each key on valuable instruments with their natural decay, and the ability to customize each timbre according to specific needs. KRONOS 3-73 on SGX-2 provides four grand pianos with distinct and peculiar characters: German Grand, Japanese Grand, Berlin Grand, and Italian Grand, all very dynamic, with a modern and expressive timbre, also producing typical acoustic piano phenomena such as Sympathetic String Resonance, key release, tonal variation caused by lid opening, and the "una corda" effect (*)
(*) Not included in the Italian Grand.
The sound library of KRONOS 3-73
KRONOS possesses a tonal palette composed of thousands of sounds, created using various synthesis engines and drawing from approximately 21 GB of internal waveforms, meticulously developed by the KORG Sound Designer team. The 120 GB internal SSD can host User Samples, audio recording files, and Sound Library data.
* SSD capacity is subject to change without notice.
Multi-Synthesis Generation
Each of the sound generators in KRONOS 3-73 can be considered an independent synthesizer employing the most advanced digital technology. Synthesis is complemented by real-time parameter control via the extensive control surface and the processing of high-quality and effective integrated effects.

Set List Mode
With the Set Lists of KRONOS 3-73, it's possible to organize the musical resources needed for a concert or session according to our needs. Activating this operating mode, the display shows 16 color-coded touch-screen slots, which, when touched, can recall the assigned Program, Combi, or Sequence, appropriately setting some parameters such as: volume, transpose, title, or performance notes like: "Sing on the chorus", "Transpose by half a tone", "Wait for the sax solo", etc., with the possibility to change the color, edit the text by varying its use with a PC keyboard connected to the USB port, thus simplifying the entry of text and numbers. There are 128 Set Lists with 128 slots each.
The Sequencer of KRONOS 3-73
Like all workstations, KRONOS 3-73 includes a high-performance Sequencer/Recorder with 16 MIDI tracks + 16 Audio Full Editing, allowing for quick storage of ideas or entire musical pieces. The audio recorder can record up to 4 tracks simultaneously (16/24-bit linear at 48 kHz), with the ability to also acquire tracks already recorded on KRONOS 3-73 complete with effects, placing the resulting audio file in one of the sequencer's tracks. Editing functions such as: Mixer Automation, Copy, Paste, Normalize, and some sophisticated tools that facilitate the composition or arrangement process such as KARMA or Drum Tracks are also present, shortening the creation of entire pieces.
The sequencer's composition tools
In addition to MIDI and audio tracks, the KRONOS 3-73 Sequencer offers the ideal tools to transform your musical ideas into a complete composition, using real-time interactive techniques not available or difficult to use on a computer-based system.
KARMA: this algorithmic function generates elaborate musical phrases, grooves, and backing tracks, based on notes and chords played in real-time, and on the movement of knobs, sliders, and switches. KARMA also allows Wave-Sequencing, Note Mapping, and 8 different scenes for each Layer, expanding performance possibilities in Live settings.
Drum Tracks: Automatically producing rhythmic patterns, Drum Tracks can assist in various situations, such as during practice or composition, or become part of a musical piece or arrangement. They are capable of executing complete percussive performances with all the nuances of a real drummer, thus going beyond the role of a simple Drum Machine.

Open Sampling System
KRONOS 3-73 can sample an external audio source or resample its own performance. The User Sample area allows for the creation of personal sample libraries by utilizing the internal SSD, and also importing them via USB in the most common formats and modifying them through the internal Sample Editor. This allows you to center your music production system exclusively on KRONOS 3 without the need for other devices.
Effects Processor
KRONOS 3-73 possesses a powerful effects processor capable of processing any sound source, both internal and external, generating up to 12 Insert effects applicable to individual timbres in a Program, on the Timbre/Track of a Combination, or of the Sequencer; 2 Master effects individually adjustable with sends, and 2 Total effects as a global sound processing stage. Furthermore, on each single timbre of a Combi or a Sequencer Song (MIDI or Audio), a three-band equalizer is available for further tonal control.
Color TouchView Display
The nerve center of the KRONOS 3-73 user interface is the large eight-inch (800 x 600 pixel) SVGA color TouchView display, which allows for navigation between pages, selection, and precise control of parameters directly with the touch of a finger. The display also hosts the Search function, useful for quickly finding sounds based on characters contained in their names.
Control surfaces
In addition to the parameters accessible from the TouchView Display, KRONOS 3-73 also offers a variety of physical controls useful for both Performance and navigation: a four-axis Joystick, Ribbon Controller, two assignable buttons, and a Vector Joystick. Above the keyboard, there are nine sliders, eight rotary controls, and various buttons that interact with the sound generator's parameters. On the rear panel, there are inputs for pedals: Damper with half-pedal and two assignable pedals, one continuous and the other a switch. Furthermore, on KRONOS 3-73, any type of USB/MIDI Class Compliant controller, such as KORG nanoPAD, nanoPAD2, or padKONTROL, can be directly connected to the USB port. In this way, their pads 1 to 8 are automatically mapped to the virtual ones on KRONOS to play percussive sounds, trigger, or change chords in Chord mode.
SMOOTH SOUND TRANSITION seamless sound transitions
This function, made possible by the high computational capacity of KRONOS 3-73, allows for the selection of different resources and operating modes (Program, Combi, Song), ensuring continuous transitions of sounds and effects without interruptions. This characteristic is highly appreciated and praised by many artists and musicians because it allows for a performance without annoying blackouts between the various musical parts used during a performance.
Weighted RH3 Weighted Hammer Action Keyboard
KRONOS 3-73 adopts the KORG RH-3 Real Weighted Hammer Action keybed, offering a solid and consistent response with a gradual weighting mechanism that reproduces the difference in hammer mass between the bass and treble regions, typical of an acoustic piano.
Additional Sound Libraries for KRONOS 3-73
KRONOS Sound Libraries are collections of high-quality Programs and Samples continuously published since its introduction, with a catalog of over 300 titles featuring a diverse tonal selection compared to factory Programs. These can be purchased and used with all KRONOS models. These sound resources are distributed directly by KORG on its Shop (click here), where you can search for titles by instrument: Piano, Strings, Organ, Bass, etc., publication year, price range, and developer name. Two types of libraries are available: EXs, which include new PCM data, and KRS, which contains only Program data. Artist Signature libraries also offer valuable Programs created or used by top musicians and artists in their most famous hits or prestigious concerts. Demo sounds and videos are also available for these libraries, allowing you to evaluate their content. For users who own multiple KRONOS units, the library license allows sharing each title across a maximum of three units.
- ** The Demo version has a usage limitation: during playback, a cyclical volume fluctuation occurs.
- ** The total of 3 units can also include NAUTILUS.

Details on KRONOS 3 - 73's Multi-Synthesis Generation System
Thanks to the advanced technology employed and the sophisticated dynamic voice allocation system, KRONOS can simultaneously use the nine integrated sound engines to produce very interesting tonal results.
SGX-2 (Premium Piano)
Provides the most globally appreciated concert grand pianos: German, Japanese, Berlin, and Italian Grand, all with loop-less stereo samples, sampled key by key with their natural decay, 12-level Velocity Switch, key releases, string resonance, and "una corda" pedal, to reproduce the finest details of a grand piano.
- String resonance: Reproduces the typical phenomenon of an acoustic piano achieved by pressing the Damper pedal and allowing all strings to resonate freely. Playing one or more keys then causes other strings to vibrate sympathetically due to resonance. The harmonics generated by the resonance can be displayed on the corresponding Edit screen.
- Una corda: The left pedal on a grand piano is the soft pedal. Its technical name is "Una corda". Normally, the piano hammer strikes all the strings associated with a given note, usually three or two. The Una Corda shifts the entire piano mechanism so that the hammer strikes only one string, producing a typical sound with a characteristic attenuated and mellow timbre. Italian Grand does not have Una Corda
EP-1 (MDS Electric Piano)
Accurately reproduces the timbres of six famous vintage electric pianos with tines and reeds, including the renowned Tine EP I Early. EP-1 uses MDS (Multi-Dimensional Synthesis) technology, which ensures smooth transitions between the dynamic levels of multi-samples, also allowing control over "virtual" sound tines and other elements such as hammer mass. In addition, it includes simulations of the most typical amplifiers, speakers, and vintage effects.
CX-3 (Electromagnetic Organ)
Accurately simulates the typical elements of an electromagnetic organ, including tube amplifiers, characteristic effects such as Vibrato/Chorus, Rotary Speaker, Fold-back, Leakage, and tonewheel noise. The 9 sliders on the panel allow control via the Drawbars as on the original models. The KRS-06 and 06B Sound Libraries, with a total of 256 Programs featuring a careful selection of electromagnetic organs, are also included in the User Memory of KRONOS 3-73.
HD-1 (High-Definition Synthesizer) - PCM, Sampling, and Wave Sequencing
HD-1 is based on PCM sampling, accessing a large Sample Library residing on the internal SSD with low-aliasing KORG oscillators, multimode filters with resonance, envelopes, and LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators). HD-1 produces sounds typical of every musical style and repertoire: from orchestral to classic Rock; from Hip Hop to Funk, this wide assortment allows the use of KRONOS 3-73 in many musical situations.
MS-20EX (Legacy Analog Collection) Analog Physical Modeling Generator
The vintage KORG MS-20 semi-modular monophonic synth was introduced in 1978, quickly gaining widespread acclaim thanks to the characteristic timbre of its oscillators, aggressive filters, extensive patching capabilities, and sound design possibilities. MS-20EX accurately reproduces the tonal character of the MS-20 through KORG's proprietary CMT (Component Modeling Technology), which allows for extensive programming options such as filter modulation with audio frequency oscillators, transforming audio inputs into control signals, controlling virtual knobs with modulation sources like additional envelopes, LFOs, and real-time controls, all with ample polyphonic articulation.
PolysixEX (Legacy Analog Collection) Analog Physical Modeling Generator
The Polysix, a 6-voice analog polyphonic synth with programmable memories, appeared in 1981 with an apparently very simple structure featuring a single oscillator and sub-oscillator, a four-pole filter, LFO, envelopes, an effective Chorus/Ensemble, and an integrated arpeggiator. It was capable of generating very effective and iconic sounds like Strings or Pads. PolysixEX can accurately simulate these with high polyphonic capability and greater synthesis possibilities.
AL-1 (Analog Synthesizer) - Analog Synthesis Generator for Physical Models
It features low-aliasing virtual oscillators that recreate the same impact as analog synthesizers, complemented by multimode filters with resonance and typical modulation controls to obtain classic analog sounds or hybrid sounds of great tonal interest.
MOD-7 (Waveshaping VPM Synthesizer) - VPM/Waveshaping/PCM Sound Generator
Combines various synthesis techniques: Variable Phase Modulation (VPM), Wave-Shaping, Ring Modulation, Sampling, subtractive synthesis, with a complex patching system worthy of a great modular synth. It produces sounds ranging from classic FM synthesis (bells, basses, electric pianos, etc.), with the ability to import sounds directly from vintage DX series synths; to the production of highly articulated and complex soundscapes.
STR-1 (Plucked Strings) - Physical Modeling Generation
Physically models plucked and struck string instruments with advanced proprietary technology, producing very interesting timbres with dynamic-timbral nuances extremely difficult to reproduce with other systems. STR-1 can also generate sounds that obey the laws of physics but do not exist in reality, such as playing the harmonics of a metal bar struck by a piano hammer, singing into a guitar string, processing Samples and audio signals through physical models, including the returns of KRONOS 3's own effects.
