KORG MINILOGUE XD is a 4-voice polyphonic synthesizer that maintains the same warm analog sound and extensive panel control possibilities of the previous model, with the addition of a new digital Multi-Engine, effects, a powerful Sequencer, and microtonal functions, further expanding the sound creation possibilities for every musician.
KORG MINILOGUE XD is based on the further development of the technology originally used in minilogue, whose authentic analog sound made a big impact in the synth world. With 4 voices of polyphony, the KORG MINILOGUE XD synthesis structure consists of: 2VCO + MULTI ENGINE, 1VCF, 2EG, 1VCA, and an LFO; to which are added the characteristic circuits of this instrument such as Wave Shaping for harmonic modeling, Ring & Cross Modulation, Sync between oscillators, a two-pole filter, and Drive which adds more body to the signal sent to the filters. Every parameter has been meticulously fine-tuned based on the requests of established musicians. The timbres obtainable from this instrument range from warm Pad sounds, to typical "fat" and present analog bass timbres, to dynamic and penetrating "Lead" solo sounds, practically covering every genre and repertoire requirement. It is naturally possible to save personal sounds in the instrument; 500 total memory locations are available, 200 of which are already preset.
In the synthesis structure, a digital "Multi-Engine" oscillator is added to the two traditional analog VCOs, significantly increasing the programming versatility of minilogue XD. The Multi Engine comes originally with 3 types of sound generators: Noise, VPM, and a User Slot, capable of generating sounds different from those of analog oscillators. The three sources can, however, be used simultaneously, thus obtaining hybrid timbres with yet-to-be-explored potential.
The Noise Generator provides 4 types of noise, essential for percussive sounds or effects. The digital filter can be used to modify the color of the noise itself.
The VPM oscillator generates sounds using VPM (Variable Phase Modulation)/FM synthesis, with a two-operator structure, 16 types of oscillators controllable directly via the SHAPE knob. It can produce incisive, metallic sounds with a complex harmonic spectrum, well beyond the possibilities of pure analog subtractive synthesis, but always with very intuitive programming.
User Oscillators allow loading additional Custom oscillator types, downloadable from the internet. 16 Slots are available for their placement, while a Morphing Wavetable oscillator is already provided as a Preset.
KORG MINILOGUE XD's high-quality effects are obtained using a powerful dedicated 32-bit floating-point DSP, which allows the generation of 3 different types of effects: modulation, reverb, and delay, which can also be used simultaneously. It is possible to choose from a wide range of Chorus, Ensemble, Delay, and Reverbs, which add the final touch to every timbre. This section also has Slots for loading Custom effects.
The KORG MINILOGUE XD Step Sequencer has 16 Steps and supports Real Time and Step recording. The 16 control keys can be used to directly select a Step, quickly change its pitch, its "Mute" status, or even improvise. The "Motion Sequence" function accurately memorizes the movements of 4 knobs, allowing the creation of sounds that evolve over time; on each Step, it is possible to precisely record not only uniform variations, but also very sudden ones. This function can be used to create sounds with a distinctly different timbre for each Step, starting from a single Program, such as Percussive Patterns or various types of sound effects. Motion Sequence is a source of much inspiration in the field of Sound Design.
