Moog Music has officially resumed production of the Minimoog Model D, the world's first portable synth and still considered the quintessential synthesizer. At Asheville, home of the historic American brand, they have decided to put their flagship model back into production using the same artisanal manufacturing procedures and identical components. No modifications were made to the signal path and sound generation engine, but several important new features have been introduced that do not alter the sound potential of the historic edition but further enrich it.
The main modifications introduced with the new edition of the Minimoog Model D include a Fatar keyboard with velocity and after pressure, a dedicated LFO with square and triangular waveforms, CV outputs for pitch, gate, velocity and after pressure, basic MIDI integration and a mixer modification that allows for even greater sound pressure and overdrive. For the first time, the Minimoog Model D now integrates a spring-loaded pitch wheel that enables even better live performance.
Every single unit of the Minimoog Model D is hand-built at the Moog Factory in Asheville by Moog employees who are themselves company owners. Due to the complexity of the manufacturing process, only a limited number of units can be produced per month and lead times to acquire this highly sought-after synth could be quite long. It is also a limited edition destined to increase in value over time.
