Overview of the MXR M310 Textures™ Granular Synth Engine
The MXR Textures™ Granular Synth Engine breaks down sound and reworks it into entirely new forms. Thanks to granular synthesis, the audio signal is divided into small fragments, called Grains, and reproduced according to the selected settings. Along with dynamic processing, this process allows the pedal to record what is played and transform it into a continuously evolving combination of sounds and timbres: brilliant pads, glitch rhythms, expansive regenerating reverbs, and much more. A true sound laboratory in pedal format, where each Grain can be freely shaped.
In simple terms, MXR Textures™ records the incoming audio signal into a buffer and plays it back, similar to a delay or a looper. What distinguishes this pedal, however, is the way the audio is reproduced. In a delay, there is a predetermined time interval between recording and signal playback; Textures™, on the other hand, divides the audio into smaller segments, called Grains, and plays them individually. Each Grain has a start position within the recording and a size, which determines its playback duration. The Grain size can be thought of as a read window: increasing it includes a larger portion of the recorded audio. A small size produces short, fragmented sound impulses, while a larger size allows entire musical passages several seconds long to be played back. Grains can also be overlapped. Without overlap, only one Grain is played at a time. By increasing the overlap, multiple fragments of the recording are played simultaneously and interact with each other, generating a denser and more articulate effect.
