Architecture and Operational Logic
Launch Control 3 is designed as a modular control center. The structure includes two native DAW modes, seven Custom Modes fully programmable via the Novation Components application (software and browser), and a pre-configured Default mode. This architecture allows for the separation of mix control, device parameter control, and hardware control into distinct layers. This controller is very compact, despite its rich features which include encoders with visual luminous feedback (RGB), dedicated function buttons, a highly readable OLED display, and a USB-C port for power, data transfer, and firmware updates.
The 16 endless encoders prevent "jumps" in value thanks to continuous synchronization with the connected software or hardware. The response can be set to Slow, Medium, or Fast. The Shift function allows for value preview without altering the parameter, useful in live contexts.
Who is the Novation Launch Control MK3 for?
Launch Control 3 is designed for producers, sound designers, live performers, DJs, VJs, and sound and lighting technicians who desire structured physical control without excessive bulk. It is particularly suitable for those working with complex multitrack sessions and needing immediate access to parameters without interrupting the creative flow.
In the studio, it allows for quick management of mixing and automation and is also excellent for sound design based on virtual instruments. In live settings, it enables immediate control of levels and effects with clear visual feedback. In hardware configurations, it becomes a true physical extension for your synthesizers and drum machines, minimizing menu navigation for parameter access.
Compared to the XL version, it prioritizes compactness and portability while maintaining advanced software integration and complete MIDI routing. It is ideal for those who need a high-performance yet easily transportable controller or wish to combine it with other surfaces in a modular system.
Ableton Live 12+ Integration
In Mixer mode, the first row of controls allows you to manage selectable Pan or Send, while the second controls track volumes. Navigation occurs in banks of eight tracks with quick switching via the Shift plus Track key combination. In Control mode, the two rows of encoders auto-map to control up to 16 parameters of the selected device. Navigation between multiple devices occurs via Page plus Shift. The display shows track name, parameter, and value.
Logic Pro Integration
In Mixer mode, you control Pan, Send, and volume for the track "bank." In Control mode, the first row manages the Smart Controls of the selected plugin, the second row accesses the channel EQ with direct frequency and gain control for Low Shelf, Low Mid, High Mid, and High Shelf bands.
Cubase Integration
In Control mode, the first row maps the eight Quick Controls of the selected track, while the second row accesses the Channel EQ with frequency and gain control for each band. In Mixer mode, you will have Pan, Send, and Volume controls at your fingertips in banks of eight channels.
FL Studio Integration
In Control mode, you will have access to Channel Rack management and plugin parameters with Pan and Volume control per channel. In Mixer mode, you will have direct controls over parameters such as Pan, Volume, and Parametric EQ of the main mixer.
HUI Support
In the absence of a dedicated script, the Novation Launch Control 3 supports the universal HUI protocol for remote management of mixers, track selection, Pan, Volume, and Solo, Mute, and Arm management in compatible DAWs.
Custom Modes and Advanced MIDI Management
The seven Custom Modes allow for the assignment of personalized MIDI messages and complete management of routing to USB or DIN ports with the possibility of merging and channel conversion.
Hardware and Hybrid Workflow
Launch Control 3 can operate standalone powered via USB. By connecting synthesizers or drum machines to the DIN ports, dedicated Custom Modes can be created for each device, and incoming MIDI keyboards can be integrated with dynamic routing.
System Settings
The Settings menu allows for setting Global MIDI Channel, MIDI Thru, LED and display brightness, display timeout, and encoder response. A Bootloader mode is available for firmware updates and Device ID management.
