SpeakON is a type of electrical connector produced by NEUTRIK, and used in professional audio systems to connect amplifiers and loudspeakers. It is preferred over banana connectors (and others) because it ensures a perfect seal, thanks to its rotatable insertion with a snap-lock, thus providing a stable electrical contact between the two parts, and good protection against accidental short circuits in both the male and female parts, in addition to being generally more consistent and robust. Cables are terminated in the SpeakON connector by soldering or screwing into terminals, depending on the model. There are different types of SpeakON, from a minimum of 1 pair of contacts (2 poles) up to a maximum of 4 pairs (8 poles) for power signal transmission, allowing a single cable of adequate size to wire an entire multi-way speaker system, for example in 4-way multichannel systems with sub, bass, mids, highs or, more rarely, with different impedance/power depending on the type of connection of the various speakers in the system (parallel, series or mixed). Compared to the jack connector, the SpeakON does not create short circuits between the contacts during insertion or removal, which can damage the amplifier in the presence of a signal.
