DI Box for Piezo Pickups
The RADIAL ENGINEERING SB-4 is a compact active DI box optimized for use with piezoelectric transducers. It allows you to connect a violin, dobro, mandolin, cello, double bass, and other instruments amplified using a piezo without compromising tonal or frequency response.
The unit features a ¼" input for the instrument's pickup. Unlike classic DI boxes with a 1meg ohm input impedance, the RADIAL ENGINEERING SB-4 has a high impedance of 5meg ohms which smooths out those annoying peaks that give piezos a bad reputation. The higher impedance broadens the frequency response, ensuring a more natural and pleasing sound. The active circuit performs high-to-low impedance conversion and balances the signal, allowing the use of cables up to 100 meters without loss, with excellent linearity and low distortion across the entire audio range.
The RADIAL ENGINEERING SB-4 is equipped with a high-pass filter and a 180° polarity reversal switch to eliminate feedback on stage. The high-pass filter eliminates excessive bottom-end and reduces resonance that can cause annoying vibrations of the instrument's top. The 180° polarity reversal helps reduce acoustic hot spots on stage by changing the phase relationship between the PA system and the ambient acoustics which, at certain frequencies, combine to create peaks. By inverting the polarity, the acoustic peak is eliminated without resorting to heavy equalization which typically compromises the instrument's natural timbre. Connections include an AUX output for an on-stage amplifier plus a standard XLR output to power the PA. 48V power is taken from the console, thus eliminating the need for batteries or external power supplies.
