AD/DA Converter
The RME ADI-2 FS is a compact and extremely flexible 2-channel Hi-End AD/DA converter that offers first-class conversion to/from SPDIF, AES, and ADAT formats, up to 192 kHz.
Balanced analog inputs and outputs, monitoring via headphone output, SteadyClock FS for optimal conversion quality, 3-stage hardware input and output control, and the additional D-D and A-A modes transform the RME ADI-2 FS into a universal tool and flexible problem solver. Its professional-grade sound also qualifies it as an extension for other premium converters.
The RME ADI-2 FS features two servo-balanced analog line inputs via XLR/phone combo jacks, simultaneously usable balanced XLRs and unbalanced phone jacks, an adjustable high-power headphone output on the front, an optical SPDIF I/O compatible with ADAT, and a coaxial SPDIF I/O (RCA, AES/EBU compatible).
The analog inputs use the advanced circuit design of the acclaimed ADI-2 Pro, thus offering extraordinarily low noise and distortion as well as an extended frequency response. Three different settings for input and output levels provide perfect compatibility in the analog domain. Another highlight is SteadyClock FS, the latest RME clocking technology for maximum jitter suppression and minimal self-jitter.
The RME ADI-2 FS also uses the conversion technology of the ADI-2 Pro: the AK557x and AK4490 family not only offer a 192 kHz sample rate and minimal distortion but also a dynamic range of 120 dBA.
The RME ADI-2 FS has more than just outstanding sound. It also provides exciting digital connectivity. The coaxial RCA SPDIF I/O has a switchable channel status to make it fully compatible with AES/EBU (a cable adapter is required). The optical TOSLINK I/Os can handle up to 192 kHz and also function as ADAT I/O, even at 192 kHz. Operation with SPDIF input and ADAT output or vice versa is supported, both in AD/DA and D-D mode.
With the input selection set to DIG, the device functions as a digital format converter with simultaneous monitoring. The AD converter is disabled, the DA converter is still used to monitor the digital input signal, on the rear outputs and the headphone output. Format conversion is possible between all options: coaxial SPDIF (or AES) with professional or consumer status, as well as ADAT.
The ANA output selection connects the analog output circuits directly to the analog input circuits. The DA converter is no longer active. The AD converter continues to convert the analog input signal to SPDIF (AES) or ADAT, with both coaxial SPDIF and optical ADAT outputs simultaneously available. This "analog bypass" allows the RME ADI-2 FS to be used as an analog preamplifier. Gain and attenuation can be achieved through input and output level adjustment, or even fully variable when the VOL potentiometer is engaged. In this mode, the RME ADI-2 FS supports analog levels up to +22 dBu. In addition, it can function as a balanced to unbalanced converter and vice versa.
The front panel knob adjusts the headphone output volume. It can also be inserted into the rear signal path via a simple key combination, so that the rear line outputs can be continuously adjusted to the phono output level. The choice of three hardware levels remains available, thus allowing better matching of the desired levels on the front and rear outputs.
The RME ADI-2 FS uses a scaled-down version of the ADI-2 Pro's Extreme Power output stage. With power up to 0.7 watts per channel, output impedance of 0.1 ohms, a maximum output level of +19 dBu, and very low THD (-110 dB), the High Power² circuit is universally applicable. A relay ensures click-free power on and off.
Power is supplied via an included external switching power supply with a lockable connector. Thanks to a wide operating voltage range of 9-15 volts, the ADI-2 FS can be easily used with battery or rechargeable battery, thus also for mobile use. It is also perfectly suited for e.g. galvanic isolation in laboratory or measurement applications.
