TEENAGE ENGINEERING OP-Z is an extremely small portable synthesizer and drum machine with an advanced 16-track sequencer where all tracks work independently. Thanks to the step components function, it is possible to separately manage the behavior of each of the 16 steps. This can be thought of as a double-layered sequencing where the first layer is a traditional 16-step sequencer, while the second adds cycle variations, note variations, micro-sequencing, direction, parameter changes, re-trig, and much more, all on a single step. With TEENAGE ENGINEERING OP-Z, one could theoretically create an entire song using only the 1st of 16 steps, using multiple step components to create endless variations, a technique recommended only for experts and engineers. In some situations, however, it is practically impossible to predict the full length of a sequence, so TEENAGE ENGINEERING created a special component called 'catch up,' which forces a track to exit at a specific step to stay in sync. In total, there are 14 components arranged in 3 groups: triggers, note variations, and special. Each of the 14 components has 10 values and behavior programs, thus allowing for 140 ways to modify a single step – probably more than most people can handle. To make step composition truly intuitive and super fast, all TEENAGE ENGINEERING OP-Z keys are backlit with multi-color LEDs providing instant machine feedback.
