Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
The Universal Audio SD-3 is a compact cardioid dynamic microphone for drum and instrument recording, featuring Hemisphere microphone modeling technology, high SPL tolerance, and an accessory kit. Universal Audio SD-3 is "modern classic" for snare drums, percussion, and guitar amplifiers. This microphone allows you to easily record snare drums and toms, high-volume guitar cabinets, brass, and more. It is a classic dynamic microphone with high SPL handling capability, cardioid polar pattern, and the best Hemisphere microphone modeling technology, capable of delivering professional sound in any environment.
The SD-3 is powered by the same microphone modeling technology found in Universal Audio's award-winning UA Sphere microphones. With the Hemisphere microphone collection included, the SD-3 is the only dynamic modeling microphone that offers you the authentic sound of famous dynamic microphone models such as Shure, Sennheiser, and Audix.*
The SD-3 and Hemisphere plug-in work with or without UA hardware and go beyond EQ curves to give you precise control over filter, proximity, and axis: an industry first. Simply set up your SD-3 and use the plug-in to find the sweet spot for a guitar cabinet or to tame harsh frequencies on a snare drum or tom.
Universal Audio has optimized the SD-3's cardioid polar pattern for a wide range of environments. Whether it's your bedroom, an amateur or professional studio, or even a stage, the SD-3's high SPL tolerance and exceptional isolation will give you iconic sounds. Plus, its compact size allows you to position the microphone perfectly in tight spaces.
With an all-metal construction, retro finishes, and hand-selected capsules, the SD-3 stands out from other "workhorse" dynamic microphones, giving you a reliable partner perfect for capturing virtually any source.
Hemisphere microphone models included:
- DN-57 Introduced in 1965, the ubiquitous "57" is most likely the best-selling microphone of all time. It can be particularly useful when mixed with other microphones, such as ribbon and large-diaphragm condensers, to achieve a more balanced sound. The DN-57 is based on a recent production model.
- DN-545 Predecessor to the powerful 57, this model featured the Unidyne III capsule. It was widely used on Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds," including Brian Wilson's lead vocal, and in countless other recordings from that era.
- DN-604: The DN-604 model is based on a current-production 604 microphone, manufactured in Europe, which has become a standard on stages and in studios worldwide. This compact clip microphone has several applications, especially for snare drums and toms.
- DN-409U The 409 model excels on many sources, but is particularly suited for electric guitar amplifiers. It has a smooth sound and its low-end response below 100 Hz can help instruments and vocals blend well in the mix.
- DN-4 The DN-4 is based on a modern compact instrument microphone that works very well on toms, but is equally suited for guitar cabinets and snare drums. Universal Audio included a three-position filter to allow you to further shape the sound
