Strings Synthesizer with Vocoder
The WALDORF STVC is a strings synthesizer with a built-in vocoder, divided into two sections: strings and solo. The strings section starts with a bank of oscillators that use octave dividers, followed by a mixer, an equalizer, and an ensemble effect, just like the machines of the 70s. A single knob cycles through mixer and EQ settings for violin, viola, cello, brass, organ, choir, and more to create rich and creamy sound textures. The Solo section is a 16-voice synthesizer, with a single Tone knob that manages many useful settings. The Vocoder replaces the equalizer in the strings section with a filter bank that shapes the sound via voice input, producing fairly intelligible spoken and sung words thanks to the polyphonic oscillator. Formants can be changed, which can result in a very noticeable gender shift. Adjustable oscillator jitter makes the voice hoarse, shrill, or whispered. Solo can go through the Vocoder or play in parallel. The Freeze button allows you to "freeze" a short fragment of speech, which is then repeated by the Vocoder every time a key is pressed. Playback speed can be changed, while a new Tweak function allows editing or modulation of details, such as the solo cutoff frequency or the chorus LFO frequency. It is similar to a modulation matrix but also allows implicit settings to be changed with a fixed value or offset. Three effects operate simultaneously: Animate is effectively a modulation of the strings or vocoder recording, while Phaser is a must-have for any machine of this type. A high-quality reverb with adjustable size can be mixed into the output. The WALDORF STVC comes with a high-quality microphone that plugs directly into the front panel where it belongs.
