Microphone Preamplifier with Tone Shaping
The WARM AUDIO TB12 TONE BEAST BLACK is one of the best microphone preamplifiers on the market in its price range. It uses quality components built in the USA, normally found in much more expensive machines.
In addition to its unparalleled quality and affordability, the Tone Beast excels in flexibility thanks to unique features capable of shaping the sound, as if you had multiple preamplifiers with different circuitry at your disposal.
The input stage can accommodate any type of source, line or microphone. Thanks to the switch called TONE, the impedance is varied from 600 ohm to 150 ohm: this results in a +6dB increase, bringing the maximum gain from +65dB to +71dB. This, in addition to making the unit a perfect complement for ribbon microphones, allows for a significant change in the tonal character of connected microphones or instruments. The TONE control affects all inputs (MIC, LINE, and Hi-Z).
Specifications
- x731 / x18 switch: 2 completely different discrete op-amps, one based on the classic OP AMP 1731 style, characterized by vintage sound, the other based on the 918, more modern and transparent. Both components are mounted on standard 6-pin sockets, allowing the user to use other OP AMPs of their choice
- Capacitors Switch: You can select 2 different capacitors, Steel and Nickel, meaning a Tantalum capacitor (vintage sound) and a decidedly "clean" Electrolytic one
- Output Transformer Switch: The output transformer can be completely bypassed, to have a transparent preamp without transformers (the output is attenuated by 8dB)
- Output Transformer Selector Switch: allows you to choose between two different CineMag output transformers. The "Steel Core" has a decidedly Vintage flavor with a slight emphasis on the mids. The "50% Nickel Core", designed by CineMag specifically for the Tone Beast, has more "Clean" sonic characteristics. The nickel version undergoes a special processing which, while maintaining a very linear response, maintains a very soft and effective sonic footprint
